AUCKLAND — A 6-year-old boy was injured in the leg by a stray bullet in a shooting at a petrol station in East Auckland on Friday night, authorities said.

The shooting came two hours before a man was shot dead at a street memorial to recent murder victims.

Police said the boy was shot dead around 9:20 p.m. Friday at a Kwiksab gas station on 22nd and East 12th Streets.

Authorities said the boy’s father stopped at a station to fill up with petrol. Authorities said the boy’s 3-year-old sister was also in the car.

Police said gunshots were suddenly fired at the station, with multiple shooters apparently trying to shoot another person at the station.

Authorities said the boy was hit multiple times in the leg by stray bullets. His father took him to the hospital, where he stabilized on Saturday. His father and daughter were uninjured.

Authorities said the suspect and the subject fled before police reached the petrol station. The motive for the shooting is under investigation, but no arrests have been made.
